December Update

November 30, 2009 in Update | Comments (0)

Here’s What’s Happening Locally in December!

Day of Action! – December 5, 2009

SFO-OFA needs all hands on deck to help turn two local districts blue!  Join SFO-OFA, the California Democratic Party, the Democratic Party of Sacramento County, and Take Back Red California on Saturday, December 5th for a Day of Action!  The Day of Action is a large-scale voter registration drive in Congressional District 3 and Assembly District 5. Bring your family and friends and help us walk precincts in red districts that Democrats can turn blue in 2010! Every precinct walker will be provided with voter registration training and materials to make it happen.  For meeting time and location, the day’s agenda, and to sign up, please go to:  http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gpcfr4

Senate Calls – Ongoing!!!

The House has passed it’s bill, now it’s time for the Senate. We need to keep the calls going and the pressure on our representatives!! There are two things we can do…

1)      Keep calling our Senators – they need to hear how important it is that they vote for reform.

Barbara Boxer – (202) 224-3553

Dianne Feinstein – (202) 224-3841

2)      We now have the ability to call out of state and encourage people to call their Senators. This works through the Neighbor to Neighbor tool that many of us used during the campaign.

http://my.barackobama.com/CTSenCalls

We can call any state we want, just change the state abbreviation in the link above (it is currently set for Connecticut, but you can put in any that you want). Let’s focus on Senators that seem to be on the fence including; Nelson (NE – Nebraska), Lincoln (AR – Arkansas), Conrad (ND – North Dakota), Landrew (LA – Louisiana) and of course Feinstein (CA – California).

When making calls, please keep track of how many calls you made and then simply send me an email with the details (how many calls did you make? How many people committed to calling?) IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO TRACK OUR WORK!!

HERE’S WHAT SFO-OFA DID IN NOVEMBER!!!

SFO-OFA had a very successful donation drive last month for our Day of Service event!  To support and honor of our local Veteran’s, SFO-OFA hosted a donation drive to collect items for patients at Mather Hospital.  On November 7th, many volunteers dropped off items for patient “goodie bags” which included essentials such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.  Many VA patients are in need of these items while in the hospital.  Through the great generosity of SFO-OFA volunteers, we were able to collect enough times to make 86 goodie bags!  A small group of volunteers had the opportunity to visit patients on Veteran’s Day to give them a “goodie bag” and thank them for their service.  Every patient was extremely surprised and pleased with the donation from SFO-OFA.  Many thanks to those of you who helped make this event a success!

Happy Holidays!!

Sacramento for Obama – Organizing for America members there are critical issues in front of the American people right now, you know that. The economy is still struggling, the health care fight is on, and on and on. The time is now to step it up and step into action. Everyone worked very hard during the campaign, many to the point of burnout – we know. But, if there was ever a time to get back involved or get involved for the first time that time is now. We cannot allow special interests to be the face of our country because they are not. Those faces are yours as are the voices and those faces and voices must be seen and heard. Bookmark this web address so that you can easily check on upcoming meetings and events in the greater Sacramento area to support our President:

During the campaign we ran “Camp Obama” training sessions all around the country.

Congressional District 3

Many of you have expressed an interest in electing a Democrat to the 3rd Congressional District seat (it is currently occupied by Dan Lungren). But, a lot of you perceive it as being a difficult win for a Democrat. Well we are glad to let you know that this is a targeted race, that that are very strong feelings that we can take this seat from Dan Lungren. Here is the link to an article from the Sacramento Bee about the race:

As was shown in the Obama campaign – it is never too early to get involved. The three Democrats who have filed to run are listed here with the websites for you to check them out and get involved.

Organizing for America (OFA) Update – Area Meetings

OFA is hiring staff in California and getting the infrastructure in place to provide support to the local OFA organizations. In Sacramento we have been working hard to develop a structure that will support what the national OFA organization is doing and will also continue to grow the grassroots movement at the local level. We are in the process of setting up Area Team meetings to kick the marrying of National OFA and SFO-OFA. They will be the week of June 15th – we will send that information out early next week.

What are we going to do at the Area Team meetings? This isn’t just a meeting for the sake of having a meeting is it?

No, this is the initial meeting of the Area teams to introduce the smaller working groups to each other and OFA, to establish some leadership for the Area Teams and to start working on projects that are consistent with the national goals while giving those goals a local influence and voice. The time for work is now!

How are the area teams set up?

We are working specifically on Congressional Districts 3 and 5. The area teams in CD 5 are going to be set up by Supervisorial Districts. So, if you live in Midtown or Natomas you are in CD 5 and will be on Area Team 1 (which corresponds with Supervisorial District 1), if you live in the Arden Arcade area of CD5 you are on Area Team 3 (corresponds with SD 3).

Health Care Organizing Kick-Off

On June 6th, thousands of people just like you are beginning to organize for health care reform by hosting or attending a Health Care Organizing Kickoff. No experience is required to host or attend–we’ll give you everything you need to make it a success. At these kickoffs, you’ll watch a special message from the President, meet like-minded supporters in your neighborhood, make plans for reaching out in your community–and start to put those plans in action. Together, we’ll win health care reform the same way we won the election: Building support one block, one neighbor, one conversation at a time. Please go to the following link to sign up to either attend or host a kick off meeting:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/hckickoff

In sticking with the health care issue, OFA groups across the state will be hosting health care projects on June 27th. It is the goal of SFO-OFA to host a health care fair. If you are interesting in helping to organize this event and/or have a service that you can contribute to the event, please reply to this email.

Town Hall Meeting with Congressman Lungren – We Need To Represent!

Congressman Dan Lungren is holding a town hall in Folsom and we need Obama supporters to be there, to be heard. A strong OFA team presence will say to Congressman Lungren that he needs to work in the spirit of cooperation with the Obama Administration and that he represents ALL the residents of CD3, not just those who voted for him. Following President Obama’s example, we will engage the Congressman in a respectful dialogue to encourage him to find common ground with the President. Change will not come easy and we will not get there in a day, but we will remain engaged and we will get there! YES WE CAN! Wear your “I Voted For Change” t-shirt . Please sign up at this link:

Congratulations to everyone on a successful Pledge Project weekend last Saturday! Over 1,000 canvassing or tabling events were held across the country resulting in unprecedented support for President’s Obama’s direction on the economy.

To build on that success Organizing for America is giving us more tools and additional asks to keep the momentum going – please read the information below from Mary Jane Stevenson, the California OFA Liasion and take action. Thanks!

Fellow Organizers,

After winning a two-year campaign for the opportunity for change, we are now embarking on a four (and hopefully eight)-year campaign to accomplish that change. Please join me in these beginning stages of that campaign – as so many of you already have with your continued commitment to the pledge project. And now, as we help our President get a budget passed – a budget that is the essential blueprint for his agenda.

The vote on President Obama’s proposed budget is probably going to happen late next week. Let’s make sure that congress hears our voices!

OFA has a great new CALL TOOL for volunteers to call our supporters nationwide! We want to get as many people signing the pledge (online and offline) as possible, AND we want to be sure they are calling folks ON THE HILL non-stop.

Almost 50,000 calls were made yesterday across the country! In one day! To congressional folks! Every single district got called, and the AVERAGE per office was over 100. Let’s keep it going!

Here’s the link for people to call supporters and ask them to call their congressional representatives:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/contact/splash/budgetaction

Here’s the direct link to the call tool to call congress:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/callcongress/budget/

Send the links to everyone!

This weekend in your area. We want to be able to highlight some of the great things people are continuing to do with the pledge drive. If you know of a phone bank, canvass or service project that will be gathering pledges this weekend send me the info! OFA will pitch some events to the press. Send me the info in this format ASAP:
